Picture this: You’re stepping onto the vast, icy, rugged landscape of Antarctica. Towering icebergs surround you and curious penguins waddling by. But here’s the catch — packing the wrong gear for this extreme environment can make or break your once-in-a-lifetime voyage.

As a seasoned polar expedition guide & Zodiac boat driver who regularly traverses the high Arctic and Antarctica, I’ve helped hundreds of travelers make the most of their dream Antarctic adventure by guiding them to the right gear.

This ultimate Antarctica Expedition Packing Guide is filled with my personal experiences and hard-learned lessons on preparing for the world’s southernmost, most exhilarating continent — to ensure you’re ready for a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable journey.

1. Layering Like a Pro – The Key to Staying Warm and Comfortable

In Antarctica, it’s all about layering.

Temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day, and layering lets you adapt quickly to keep comfortable on shore and back on the ship. Here’s how to nail each layer:

Base Layers

Your base layer is like your second skin — it must keep you warm and comfortable. Aclima and Devold set the standard with 100% wool garments crafted in Norway, where staying warm is practically an art form.

Wool is breathable, moisture-wicking, and even retains warmth when wet — an absolute must in Antarctica.

As polar guides, we favor merino wool over synthetics because it’s itch-free and helps regulate body temperature. This makes it perfect for keeping us warm and dry during zodiac cruising and windy shore landings.

Pro Tip: Bring at least one extra base layer set. This allows you to switch out during midday if one set gets damp, which is inevitable with all the exploring you’ll be doing!

Mid Layers

For insulation, a quality mid-layer makes all the difference. These mid-layers are the unsung heroes of cold-weather gear as they trap heat while still letting your skin breathe.

A solid fleece or down layer works best. Norwegian brand Helly Hansen offers a range of stylish, high-quality yet affordable options. Take a walk on Oslo’s street; almost every Norwegian has a piece or two from Helly Hansen.

Looking for something more eye-catching and standout? Amundsen Sports makes incredible sweaters that blend modern style with family heritage. I can’t count the times colleagues and guests have asked about my Amundsen sweaters — they’re that functional and stylish, perfect for layering!

Outer Layers

Your outermost layer should shield you from Antarctica’s icy winds and sweaty moisture (during your hike at Orne Harbor, for example). Look for truly “waterproof” (not just water-resistant), “windproof”, and “breathable” outerwear. Helly Hansen & Swedish brand Haglöfs have jackets and pants that offer solid waterproofing and durability without breaking the bank.

For those who want a blend of style and functionality, Amundsen Sports’ jackets and waterproof pants are exceptional, combining Nordic craftsmanship with cutting-edge materials. They might just be the best investment you make for your trip.

Pro Tip: I often say, “Better too warm than too cold”. It’s easier to shed a layer if you’re warm than to warm up if you’re freezing, and Antarctica’s cold waits for no one.

Layering like an onion ensures you stay cozy regardless of weather changes.

2. Footwear That Handles Ice, Snow, and Zodiac Boats

For navigating icy, snowy landscapes and wet boats, sturdy footwear is a must. Most Antarctic expedition operators provide waterproof Muck Boots for shore landings, but if you’re with a line that doesn’t, your main outdoor pair should be high, insulated, and waterproof to handle snow and icy landings.

Prioritize comfort for all-day wear, especially with a non-slip sole. The keywords here are boots with “insulation”, “waterproofing”, and “excellent grip”.

What about socks?

Choosing the right socks is almost as important as the boots themselves. Skip the cotton ones — they won’t keep you warm in damp conditions, so opt for wool. The Nansen Wool Socks from Devold are beloved by us expedition guides and polar travelers alike for their warmth, moisture control, and comfort.

They’ll keep your feet dry even when temperatures dip, which is vital for long excursions.

Pro Tip: Pack at least three pairs of wool socks. Swap out socks midday if they get damp to keep your feet warm and comfortable.

3. Must-Have Accessories – Staying Warm, Dry, and Ready for Anything

Accessories might sound secondary, but don’t underestimate the impact of accessories — they’re the little things that make a huge difference in rapidly changing weather like Antarctica.

Head and Neck Warmers

Keeping your head and neck protected from the wind is a must.

Greenlandic MuskOx wool (Qiviut) products are a game-changer. They’re exceptionally soft, light, and incredibly warm. Qiviut is one of the warmest natural fibers in the world — 8 times warmer than sheep wool — and when worn as a headband or neck warmer, it’s perfect for layering and keeping your core temperature up.

I swear by mine daily, they are perfect under jackets and hoods without any bulk. Some of my colleagues have (no joke) their entire upper body covered by 100% Qiviut products, and we love them for good reasons.

Hand Protection

Your hands will likely face the brunt of the cold on Zodiac rides and while snapping photos, and cold hands take forever to warm up, so good gloves are essential.

My go-to choice is the Vallerret Photography Gloves. They’re unbeatable in water resistance and windproofing. Packed with extra thoughtful features for photographers, such as magnetized flip-back fingers for easy camera access and an SD card slot right on the palm. These gloves allow for excellent dexterity, even in extreme cold.

I wore mine while driving the inflatable Zodiac for small boat cruising rounds. My Vallerret Tinden is windproof and water-resistant enough to withstand the long hours we spend out on the waters in Antarctica.

Goggles

Speaking of Small Boat Cruising activity, when you’re out on the water (which you will fall in love with), a reliable pair of goggle is a must.

An often-overlooked essential, my personal favorite is Outdoor Master’s ULTRA Snow Goggles with ZEISS, the official supplier of the U.S. Ski Team. They’re fog-proof, breathable, comfortable, and provide UV protection, doubling as sunglasses and keeping your vision clear on sunny/snowy, windy days.

Pro Tip: Normal sunglasses just won’t cut it in Antarctica’s dry, chilly winds — trust me, you’ll thank me later for recommending gear that keeps your vision clear through the rapidly changing weather.

4. Binoculars – Bringing Antarctica’s Wildlife Up Close

One of Antarctica’s greatest thrills is observing the incredible wildlife up close. From penguins tobogganing, and seals galumphing, to whales breaching in the distance, a solid pair of binoculars can transform each sighting into a truly magical moment.

Why Swarovski?

Swarovski is renowned for its crystal-clear, sharp optics. Their binoculars are the favorites among polar guides as Swarovski’s premium glass reduces eye strain, making them perfect for extended Wildlife Watch in Antarctica’s bright, reflective environment.

I recommend choosing a model that matches your activity level. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the NL Pure (and cannot use anything else after trying it on); while average travelers will enjoy the lightweight portability of the colorful CL Curio (which fits nicely in your pocket) without sacrificing image quality.

5. Sunscreen and Lip Balm

Yes, even in Antarctica!

The reflection of the sun on snow and ice is intense, especially with the ozone hole effects near the poles. Be sure to pack a high-SPF sunscreen and reapply daily, regardless of the weather.

For full protection, choose a product with UVA & UVB coverage — being Asian, I swear by Skin Aqua from Japan for its SPF 50+/PA++++ feature. You can easily find it on Amazon. Don’t forget to pick up a high-SPF lip balm to prevent chapped, windburned lips as well.
